With advances in surgical technology, there is currently a shift to the outpatient setting for the appropriate surgical candidate.
Dr. Salinsky performed his first Outpatient Knee Replacement surgery a couple of years ago. Now after two years we’ve done over 50 outpatient knee replacements. Patients are happy to be home the same day sleeping in their own bed eating their own food on their own couch! An important factor for a successful surgery is having a well constructed Pre-Op, Intro-Operative, and Post-Operative setup. Assuring that all of the these components are in place assists the orthopedic surgeon and his team for best being prepared for surgical outcomes.
The patient selected for this orthopedic procedure must also meet certain criteria before being chosen for this Outpatient Knee Replacement procedure. For example, a person who is not overweight and does not smoke has less risk factors versus someone who smokes and is obese.
A benefit of the surgery is that the patient is able to go home on the same day. Usually the patient would stay in the hospital for observation of pain and nausea. By pairing up with a home health partner, these symptoms can be monitored by a professional nursing staff right in the comfort of the patient’s home which lowers the overall health care costs for all involved. Studies have shown that Inpatient and Outpatient Knee Replacements both are equally effective in returning a person to better quality of life and mobility.
